Source of Beech timber plank?
raynerd:
Hi guys, I'm trying to source two sheets of 18mm thick, 24x25cm beach. I'm struggling, I don't want to pay the Earth and everything on ebay seems to be 120-160mm wide, too narrow. I'm not really well up with wood working and would appreciate anyone who could help me source some!
All the best
Chris

That's very wide for a single plank, if you could get one that wide it most probably curl up. You'd either need to get some narrow planks and join them up with biscuits and alternate the curve in the grain, or use a veneer ply perhaps. Depends on what it's for?

This back plate for a clock.
Actually, I think you can see this is made from joined pieces.
Still, need to source something suitable....
BenH:
Ahhh I see that's made from small blocks end on end and side to side, you could make it out of 2 or 3 planks joined side to side. With care in matching the colour and grain you'd hardly see it's not a single piece. Even better if you can get a thicker piece split so it's bookmatched,
Not knowing where you are in the UK I cant say, have a look round for small joinery shops or furniture makers. They could cut you a longer plank/ offcut to join up to the correct width and indeed run it in the thicknesser to get the correct size, you can get a router bit for cutting biscuit slots if you don't have access to a biscuit joiner.
Most small places will do it for a few beers tokens though, I know were I used to work we had loads of offcuts that would be perfect and most went for fire wood..

Wooden chopping board, many are beech because it's a surplus wood in many places is pieces that can be glued up easily.
That wooden box is actually a skip with hinged front, it's 10' x 5' x 5' and full of beech offcuts from a local furniture factory just down the road.
I get between 1 or 2 of these per week depending on how cold it is for the woodstoves.
Cold day
Went a bit too mad day
Eat your heart out Mawson............... :poke:
