Potty Vertical Cross Single
(1/7) > >>
sbwhart:
Just started on building a Vertical Cross Single, its very loosely based on the Kenion Engine that can be seen at the Northern Mill Engine Society at Bolton http://www.nmes.org/ I've designed it along the lines of the simple horizontal engine that can be made with limited equipment and has a lot of parts common to or similar to this engine.

This is my progress to Date

If any one would like a copy of my V1 drawings just send me a PM with you're email address and I'll fix them up, but at the moment this is very much a work in progress so the drawings will change.

Go for it Stew - We will be watching this one closely. Christmas Dinner in the Shed?

Stew-

I will be watching this with a lot of interest. You may be aware that we (NMES) have recently done a lot of work on the valve gear on the Kenyon engine, which was getting a bit sloppy in places. It has a double slide valve on the high pressure cylinder, one of which provides a variable cut-off for steam economy. The linkage to achieve parallel motion is quite interesting and I see that you have this feature in your design.

I'm not sure about the 'cross' bit in your engine description; are you thinking of adding a second cylinder?

We have steam days on Saturday 28 and Sunday 29th December for anyone who would like to see this engine running (and all the others). Free admission, children with adults are very welcome. A visit might make a welcome alternative to endless turkey, TV and computer games?

Hi Bill

I've been quite a regular visitor to the museum I'm hoping to go next week end but may not make it due to an illness in the family.

The Lumb cut off is one of the things that I like about the Kenyon but I'm afraid I've simplified that out of this model, I did try drawing up a more detailed engine some time ago but to get the detail, it would have ended up to large an engine for me.

I have thought long and hard about adding a second cylinder it shouldn't be to difficult to do but I'm building it as part of a series of simple engines for the beginner based around common  parts that I've been writing up for Model Engineer, so I'm keeping it as a single. I think I have a bit of a cheek even calling it a model of the Kenyon engine because I have simplified it so much but it should show Phineas Crowther  parallel motion off well.

Thanks for your interest

Fished off some more parts, I was a bit unsure how to make the valve stem support I wonted a design that could be made without a mill I hit on the idea of using some cold drawn angle I had.

These are the parts

I like the look of it.

I'll slap a bit of JB weld on it so it looks more like a casting. It won't be easy to adjust the valve events but I'll deal with that when I get.
to it.

Just given my shed its pre Christmas clean out and oiled my machines so that me closed down for the holiday.

All have a good Christmas
