RULE STAND
« on: October 14, 2013, 07:53:46 AM »
Hi Guys
For some time I have been thinking about making a Rule Stand for the marking out table, I didn't feel like starting a big project having just replaced the windows in each end of the workshop, so this little project suited me nicely. The body of the stand can be made in various ways, welded sections, fabricating using sections screwed together, etc. I haven't  done any casting for a few months, and if you don't do any for a while it is very easy to make mistakes, I needed the practice. I decided on an aluminium casting. I spent a couple of evenings doodling in front of the TV, I wanted to produce something modern looking, and finally settled on a design. Now to make the pattern, I have lots of timber, but never seem to have the size I want so ended up gluing three bits of beech together. Made the split pattern, two coats of french polish, and off to the moulding bench, sand perfect, mould great, BUT! couldn't remove it from the mould. Eventually it did come out making a much bigger hole than the pattern, back to the drawing board. There was not enough taper on the inside edges, so back to the mill.

The moulding went well after adjusting the taper on the pattern, the pattern virtually fell out of the mould, and the casting turned out well. Runner and risers were sawn off and the casting fettled. The casting was ready for machining, and the bottom and front were first roughed out using the shaper. Next the casting was blued, and marked out usingn the surface plate and scribing block, and was then ready for finish machining.

Hi Guys
Finish machining was carried out on the mill as shown in the pics. The other minor components were turned on the lathe and are shown before assembly. The last two pics show the finished stand assembled and in use.

David

That is a very nice rule stand, very nicely machined and nicely presented. IMHO, an excellent mix of text and photo's (of a proper size) to convey all the information. Thanks for sharing it with us.    :D :D

Cheers

It's a great feeling when you finally get around to making something that has been in the back of your mind for ages isn't it?

Well done.
