I have made some brass doorsteps for a friend and lacquered them with automotive lacquer. They have started to corrode. what is the best way of ensuring that they are protected for the sake of the friendship and my reputation as a fixer of all things mechanical. Bob Badger |

Bob No idea what the 'Automotive Lacquer' is, I have used this : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rustins-Metal-Lacquer-Clear-RUSCML125/dp/B001GU2EN4 which seems fairly durable outside. I doubt if ANY lacquer is truly permanent for exterior use. How did you prepare the brass before applying the coating ?? I used pumice powder. I would guess that 'Vim' might be OK. If you use a grease based jollop like 'Autosol' you're wasting your time ... Dave BC |

Pity! I was in Northampton a few days ago. Actually at Knuston Hall with a crowd of brass/woodwind instrument folk- half of them experts on lathes etc! Ah well? So I 'd strip the brass back to 'Bullsh1t clean and get some decent musical instrument brass lacquer. No idea what Northampton has but there are a number of suitable firms in nearby(?) Cambridge. |
