Being ignored
« on: July 09, 2013, 01:53:52 PM »
How many times have you joined in, a thread to offer advice only to be completely ignored and the next poster to offer the same advice only worded differently?

I find it infuriating and down right rude.......

I've had that happen a few times over the years on various forums.  It is very infuriating.  But....life goes on.

There are far too many people who are too lazy to read an entire thread before posting their "wisdom" to it.

I don't think you should be thinking this way, I doubt anyone has any ill intentions.  People will always be grateful for any help and advice you give, even if they don't know the proper or expected ways to express it.

Happens a lot.

I imagine the majority of time, it is not on purpose. I try not to take offense (or give it)... the written word is just such a confusing way to communicate. We are missing the cues from body language etc. It doesn't help if people skim instead of fully read too.

Did it happen here?

Science is fun.

Yeah, that's happened to me. I think I've done it to other people as well. I can assure you that, if I have, it is entirely accidental & no malice intended.
Cheers!

...and I think thats perhaps that some of us know each other personally having met at various exhibitions...

I don't mind it actually. Quite often I find that the same thing said two or three different ways teaches me something I would otherwise have missed, or promotes a thought process that leads me to something else just as productive.

Not worth getting upset about - life's too short.

At the end of the day, surely it is up to the person who requested the advice (help) to decide which advice to take.

Trouble is, people reply to what their perception of the question is. That often is not the question that the original poster had in mind !

This can happen quite accidentally.

1. OP 'A' posts a query.

2. Member 'B' starts composing a reply in the reply frame but takes his time about it.

3. Member 'C', quicker off the mark, posts the answer to the OP's question and the thread is updated on the forum.

4. Member 'B' finally completes his answer and posts it (bear in mind, all he can see is the cached page visible when he started composing the reply).

5. Member 'B' is mortified to find when he sees the updated thread that he's given the same answer as 'C'!

OK, politeness dictates that 'B' should post an edit acknowledging that 'C' beat him to the punch. But there's nothing sinister about this, just the way the system works sometimes.

What knurls my guts is seeing some new guy who posts a query 'out of the blue', gets a lot of comprehensive replies that people have obviously  taken trouble to compose, but doesn't acknowledge them and is never heard from again!

It's happened loads of times to me. Some posters only seem to trust an answer from one of their forum "friends". Bit frustrating but nothing to be done, just ignore them.  :med:
