The challenge with a fully gimballed gyro such as this is that it must be balanced so that it will rest in any position.  Then of course the rotor must be balanced.

Spinning the rotor does demonstrate its tendency to maintain the same axis in space but if there in any imbalance in the gimbals tending to change the axis the gyro will 'precess' (I think thats the word) and will tend to move in a direction at 90 degrees to what one would expect!
