Car boot sale bargain finds

Pete W.:
Hi there, Andrew,

Not much to tell, really.  I consulted Rage Customer Service asking specifically about the Evolution's ability to cut cast iron and they replied that it wasn't designed/intended/recommended for that material.  (I just looked to see if I still have their email but couldn't find it - so I can't be certain which of the three terms they used.)

I was disappointed because I had bought a chunk of cast iron from College Engineering Supplies, they advise choosing a nominal size allowing for achieving the desired dimensions if the material is -5 mm on nominal size but mine is more like +5 mm and next nominal size was well up anyway so there's a lot to come off!
I could stick it in the four-jaw and machine off the surplus but it'd take a long time and make an awful lot of unpleasant cast iron dust/swarf.   :bang:   :bang:   :bang:
I might have been able to do the job with a slitting saw in my little horizontal mill but that's not running yet.   :bang:   :bang:   :bang:

I have a 10" electric saw that I equipped with a TCT blade - I was cutting some plywood clamped to my welding bench, and thought that the going was a bit slow - I then found that the timber had shifted and I was cutting through the 18 mm solid steel top  :bang: No teeth were lost amazingly, and the erroneous cut was quite a good finish !

 Mr Mawson! Really! I remember many years ago helping my father cut some plywood on a workmate. We were using a massive old B&D industrial circular saw that would go through anything. Anything including the top of the workmate, off which I neatly sliced a corner. Luckily Father had checked underneat and told me I was "well clear" It was his best workmate. I was not!
Phil.
