Hi VT , Terry Aspin's book does look good  , I think the hammer has been forged rather than cast by the look of it but maybe it could have been wood pattern carved ? , I will clean it up tomorrow and see if I can tell.
Bob , you did well again today , that acid really cleans up the stuff well , the boring bars look new  ............... Keep up the good work lad
Cheers Mick

Mick, I was wondering about whether it was cast after I wrote that. It just so looks like it was carved.
I don't imagine cast iron makes a good hammer unless somehow malleable iron. Could it have been cast steel?
I don't suppose the carved appearance could come from chipping it out of steel? Can the forge hammer actually make those gouge shapes?
awemawson:
Is that hammer head not hand forged - ie blacksmith made ?
hermetic:
I agree with awemawson, it looks hand forged, so possibly wrought iron?
