New Toy , Chester DB8 lathe
« on: June 28, 2013, 07:15:40 PM »
Hi All, I have a new toy to add to the workshop, A smaller lathe, a Chester DB8 4 inch centre height and 14 inches between centres I think from memory.  An old friend of mine was selling it due to getting too old for standing in sheds making things, so offered it to me at a good price. For once I have bought something that just works and has everything you need with it
The lathe has not had much use and from new has been fitted with Newall DRO and inverter drive, it also came with 3 jaw scroll chuck, 4 jaw independent chuck , 4 jaw scroll chuck, face plate , 2 & 3 point steadies , quick change tool post and 7 holders, change gears and a box of lathe tools, a quick clean and oil and its ready to go.............I think thats the first time I have ever said that !!

Oh and its on its own bench too.

Cheers Mick

Hi Mick
This is a powerful and a capable lathe, I have had the DB8VS for five years. The only thing I dislike is the chuck mounting , but I am going to give it a screwed nose when I get round to it.  I have made several mods to the lathe. If you are interested I will post some pics.
                                                                  Cheers David

I've got its 7x12 smaller brother the DB7, which Warco badge differently, but like the DB8 made by Weiss in China. Been happy with mine, on the whole. They are pretty robust machines.

The DB8 looks like it shares the same 4" chucks as mine. My 3-jaw will swallow 22mm, and the 4-jaw 25mm, but my spindle bore limits long stock to 20mm; the DB8 may have a larger bore.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Hi David that would be great if you could , I was already thinking of screwed nose for spindle and also cam lock for tailstock........but interested in any other improvements too , Thanks Mick.

Looked at them a few times over the years nearly bought 4 of them one day.
What turned me off is the faffing about with change wheels, setting up and some major pitches missing.
That would p me off as well the three nuts to hold chuck on, I wouldn't recommend threaded unless like Harrison L00. What about cam lock adapter plate on to original three screw fixing.

I am intrigued by cam lock on tail stock?
