The Breakroom > The Water Cooler
Let everyone know what you are up to.

Over the years, I have always let friends and aquaintancies know what I get up to in my shop.
Whilst doing so, I always tell them that I am on the lookout for decent bits of materials, as long as it isn't just tiny bits of junk, almost anything goes.
An entertainer friend of mine called around this afternoon with a big bag of aluminium offcuts. He had recently been cleaning out his deceased brother's garage, and came across this lot, and thought that it would do for me.
The big ones are 3" diameter.
Last thursday evening, an old workmate came round, and said 'I have found a few of these, so I brought one around to see if it is any good, if it is, how many do you want?'
After a quick checkover, it turned out to be machined cast iron.
'Just bring as many as you want' I said, 'I will find a use for them sometime', behind his back, I was rubbing my hands with glee.
So this does prove, that letting people know that you will take their rubbish off their hands (their junk, my raw materials) does work.
There must be well over 100 squids worth of raw material in these two pics, ALL FOR FREE.
I wonder what will turn up next week?

Nice haul, very nice.....

Wow that's a great little treashure trove you've dug up there John
All you need now is an engine to build round that cast iron fly wheel.
Keep putting out the word

Gents,
This honestly proves that my method of working works. Treating friends well and for free, brings great rewards.
It isn't the material that gives me great satisfaction (well just a little bit), it is the thought that they thought of me instead of someone else, without having to be asked or told more than once.
This sort of thing happens on a very regular basis.
John
