A few (actually quite a few) years ago I worked on a can-am car that had a similar sounding tank (although probably about 10" in diameter). The top and bottom were joined by 1/4" flanges on each piece, sealed by a large O ring, and held together by a dozen or so capscrews. One thing you might want to consider is locating the return line into the side of the tank on a tangent and slightly pointing down, to swirl the returning oil around the sides of the tank. This reduces any splash and helps a bunch with removing the air from the scavenge side of the system. Hope this makes sense! |

Made a top piece, 2.5" thread, I figured small tops are a right pain for topping the engine oil up, so made it a touch on the big side to save spilling oil everywhere !! ... :) |
