Ok the expresion cold enough to freeze the balls of a brass monkey, is an old navy expresion, in the days of the old wooden sailing ships, the cannon balls were stored in piramids to stop the piramids falling over in rough weather they sat in a brass square, called a monkey, when it got very cold the brass square contracted and the balls became unstable and fell off.
Many common day expressions and words in every day use have their origins from the navy:-
show a leg,
log book
chip off the old block
etc etc :scratch:
