Some clamping and aligning aids
« on: May 26, 2012, 06:27:09 PM »
Hi there again

I had a little time at work to do a private project, so I decided to make some kind of a combination angle plate and something like 1-2-3 blocks.

First, the angle plate, it will consist of two ground pieces toolsteel screwed together, ground to size as a pair:

Roughing the pieces to size, taking a 10mm deep cut with a 25mm roughing endmill, machine is a Deckel Fp2

Then I ground the pieces on all sides parallel and square (Sorry, no grinding pictures, only the finished parts):

Drilling and countersinking one of the plates, switched over to the Fp2nc cnc milling machine for drilling and final milling:

Machining the prisms and the undercut, the prisms were ground after that:

The finished angle plate, it can be bolted together in different ways, as needed:

Came out pretty square ;)

That angle plate will come in pretty handy for marking out on the surface plate, holding small parts on the mill, ...

Then I made a kind of clamping block, two of them, also from tool steel and ground as a pair.

Roughing out the blocks:

Pretty heavy cut:

Mine have a difference to normal 1-2-3 blocks: A machined step, here I am doing the undercut with a 2mm Endmill:

Grinding to size, square and rectangular:

Machining a pocket in the side of the block, the opposite side will also take one:

Drilling the Blocks:

The finished blocks, with threads, note the counterdrilled threads, so they will not throw up a burr when screws or studs are tightened in the threads:

And finaly two pictures, how that blocks can be used.

Standing on the machine table, bolted down. A long, thin part is clamped against the block for machining its face. It sits against the block and the surface of the step, so it is absolute rectangular to the machine table:

In the same setup, the block is flipped over and the clamped part can be machined on the side:

Thats it for now  :D

Very nice work and design on those blocks. I am sure that they will come in handy many times. Thanks for sharing with us.  :D :D

Cheers

Stefan,

Very neat looking pieces, functional too

Certainly reinforces my want for a surface grinder  :dremel:  Been wanting one for years now.... Maybe next year?

Nice write up, good pictures

Making such fixtures is the main reason that i want a surface grinder, but i have absolutely no room left...
