Some basic air rifle projects
« on: April 05, 2013, 03:54:43 PM »
Hi, I'm new here and pretty new to machining. These are very basic compared to most of the stuff on here but it's a start. First bit is called a "butt hook" (Don't google it - you might not get what you expect!!). It fits on the butt of an air rifle. It's not finished yet as it needs the hook shortening and bending, some finishing required and some "grip" adding which I want to do by gluing some 5mm discs of neoprene rubber on the contact surface but struggling to find a small quantity of round stock.

The second bit is a hampster and is basically a way of holding the rifle by the piece of Delrin that is fitted parallel to the barrel with some adjustment in the height. Again needs finishing. I drew the handle bit in CAD, printed out and stuck it to the Delrin. I have roughed it out on the bandsaw but needs sanding to finish. I guess a CNC mill would be ideal for this as it is a mixture of curves.

Both quite simple projects but challenging enough for me. The next thing I want to look at is anodising the parts because the ally is a bit soft and will scratch too easily in use. Will post again when they are finished.

You can also buy "grip tape" as an alternative to neoprene. Looking good so far.

Have a look here Eric. The hook goes under the arm and acts as an additional contact point to support the rifle.

Thanks Arbalist. They come in all shapes, sizes and costs. These are for PCP air rifles (Daystate) but my family used to shoot smallbore .22.

The hampster works fitment is shown here...

Hi Porker,

Nice job on the hook.

You've reminded me that I've forgotten to remind myself to make a butt-hook (it may have a different name in the US!) for my old Anschutz .22 target rifle. The one on it now is a casting, unadjustable except for moving the whole thing up and down. Though OK for the standing and kneeling leagues, it hasn't got quite the right bend on it, in the horizonal plane, for when I'm shooting prone. And, due to wear and tear on the knees, I don't do much S&K now.

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Hi Porker,
I shoot pistol at Groby range in Leicester.

It's really handy being able to make your own bits and pieces especially when looking at the prices of some of the most simple parts. I do a few for fellow shooters too, helps towards the odd tin of pellets etc
Nice work on the hook and other bits.
Steve.
Steve,
I put it back together using all the right parts,
just not necessarily in the right order.

This is the one I made about ten years ago for my Crossbow. Mainly Anodised aluminium with stainless steel fasteners but the shoulder piece was moulded in silicon rubber for grip and comfort! The complete assembly is highly adjustable for angle to get exactly the fit you need. About 20 components in total including fasteners.

That looks great. How did you make the parts? Were they made on a manual machine or CNC? I like the smooth and consistent rounded edges. Did you Anodize yourself as this is a finish I would like to try?

All the parts were made on a manual milling machine, I had an Elliott Omnimill at the time. I used a couple of radius mills to round the edges. The Anodising was done by a local company, did'nt cost that much as I remember.

Although have made plenty the last 20 odd years, they re not worth making for the money.
Probably take me two days to make this so bought one for £370 http://www.hps-tr.com/images/plates/aktiv_free_rifle.jpg

Do have Anchutz armadillo and a 4765 unused in link above.

More adjustment than a 4765 heres the last one made in 2001 http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL15/728921/1243581/19907656.jpg

Jonny, I would agree there is a lot of work in these parts and making them is not financially viable. I'm not into the shooting scene myself but my nephew and niece are and as they are still kids I can make them bits and pieces and it gives me something.  to make as its the making I enjoy. I've also made simple weights and trigger pieces but they are quick and easy. I see you are in Wolverhampton which I know is part of the shooting scene as they regularly travel there for competitions. Some great bits of kit btw. Thanks for posting them.
