Nice one John!

I already have a bearing on a stick. But, edge finder use, is a new one on me......

Thanks,

I have a bearing mounted on a square bar for centring on the lathe, but the round for edge finder use is new to me it'll be made very soon!

It's nice to hear a Geordie! I haven't heard one in a long time!

Thanks again.

OK, I was going to make a square mounted bearing for the purpose: that'll be a stick mounted one, instead. Might even make both, the day I get a round tuit.
Still, I need some explainations: when the tool is used as an edge finder, You determine the moment You reached the edge when the external ring touches the workpiece and stops turning ?
Then, it should only be a matter of zeroing the dro and moving the axis half of the bearing diameter (or doing the same find on the other side of the wp, if You're looking for the wp. centre, as I'm usually doing).

Sorry to ask for that in writings, but my pc. has no speakers (providing a I could still understand enough spoken English). Tried the beta 'caption transcript' (the red "CC")  feature of Youtube, but it was of very little help. (Though fun)

That's one of the funniest things I've ever seen on you tube!!!

Not the bearing vid'.... That's great.

But do as Marcello says and click the CC button when you are on full screen, select the beta transcribe option and ok the fact it's a test feature.... The text is fantastic  :D

EG. "fetch the quill down so it's almost in the middle"      transposes to      "dick williams just want to know"!!

And all sorts of crazy words like "torpedoed" appear!

Sorry John... Just had to laugh at it.... Don't think these techys have heard a Geordie before  :)

I'll still make one of these.... Got a version for the lathe but not one that will work n the mill!

Thanks for sharing,

Ralph.

Back in the dark ages (when apprentices were expected to spark test steel for carbon content and do their own heat treating) I made my first bearing indicator (at least that is what they were called by old Germans).  The thing we added to it was to acid etch (axially aligned) bands around the OD of the bearing to make it easier to tell when it was hit-or-miss slipping when using it as a centering indicator.  The etched surface would take cold-black or cold-blue better than the non-etched surface.

As said, nothing to do with your video per say... Just a great idea that doesn't work from the techys at youboob!

I was laughing so much I had to stop watching it in case I burst me stitches!

Much fun!

Those captions are brilliant !

Two that especially caught my eye : at 0:16 there's a freudian diagnosis of MadModders as (((screwball users))) and then, despite what someone said about it not understanding Geordie, at 1:53 it has the essence of (some) Geordie pride - (((chin the South))) !!

Thanks to John for publishing the video and to David for confirming my deductions.

There are some truly wonderful variations in them there captions.

"the rahman is very important beginner to halt amo houghton of too"..... Sounds more like a Scott than a Geordie

Watched the whole vid... To be fair I stopped reading the captions and then went on to watch green sand 2

Looking at the size of the riser you settled on there really was an issue with the shrinkage!

Good result though... Really got interested in this casting again.... Not that I have the time, money or projects for it. I just like the idea of it!  :)

Got to say the graphite spray gives the best finish I've seen in about 40 casting vid's over the last few days. top tip :headbang:

Yeah, I know....  :offtopic:

But I'm all interested and stuff  :smart:

Going into the workshop tomorrow... second time since me op'... I'll make one of the little doohickies with the bearing before my guest gets here  :dremel:

Cheers John,

Ralph.
