GID Modified camping knife.
« on: April 09, 2012, 08:25:57 PM »
I know you're all probably fed up with the glow in the dark stuff by now but this was completed the other week and has been sitting on my hard drive asking nicely to be shown to the world. So...

Here's my Buck camping knife...

This is fine but I decided to make it easy to find in the dark,

Clamped to a piece of ali box section.

I then traced around the inside of the cutouts with a 3mm round carbide burr. This created an indent approx mid depth of the cutout.

Leaving a nice ghost behind  :dremel:

I decided to use my glass plate to pour on. But since this epoxy resin sticks so well to the plate it actually removes glass when you chip it off! I smeared a bit of Vaseline on the glass under the knife itself. Then firmly ductaped it into position

I mixed up a quantity of clear epoxy resin and GID powder and spooned it into the cavities with the scraper, Then chased around the edges with a pick to make sure it contacted all the sides. (archive pic' just to help visualise! Hence size diff')

The resin was then trimmed off with a long flexible blade smeared with Vaseline. This was a 5 min' resin and set probably faster than that... It was tough to cut off, a sawing action was needed and without the Vaseline I don't think it'd have been too easy cause it was still tacky.

The completed knife....

And in the dark... After the initial charge it glows eerily for 8-10hrs  :)

And that was that... Probably took no more than 30min's and it was pretty much cured in a further 10min's too!

That's it machining/modding wise for a little while till I'm back on my feet and able to stand tall and sit hunched over!
(been sliced and diced due to hernia  :dremel: Hence my more than normal activity over the last week!)

Nice one, (again), Ralph!

I used to be a caver/ potholer. Could have done with a glowing knife, on several occasions.......

Still drilling holes... Sometimes, in the right place!

Still modifying bits of metal... Occasionally, making an improvement!

Hi Roger

If the zombies come a calling I have a couple of stealthier options to hand  :borg:
A mile away would be quite a good glow too!  But I know you can see LEDs at a mile or so in pitch black. So there's hope  :)

David,
Never thought of such a practical application!   It was only £20 and then the resin/GID side even if you purchased the materials specially, you'd have loads left over to go glow crazy like me  :loco:

Happy you like it  :)

I actually "modered" something!  :mmr:  Haven't done that for a while.... Mostly scratch builds!

Thanks John, Bob  :)

John,

This stuff has sat on my shelf for years. I got it for putting into resin paper weights etc I had a thing for at the time.

Didn't occur to me to mix it into Epoxy and use it to fill stuff till I started experimenting with GID varnishes that I needed to thicken up!

Well worth a punt on some GID powder if you have somethings in mind. This    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strontium_aluminate    powder lasts for years with little/no loss of efficiency! So it can sit there for years waiting for a project to come along  :coffee:

I should be a salesman!!

Cheers Dave,

Nope... The powder is non toxic and won't make your fingers glow unless it's on them
