   nice job Ksor  Just one thing you will need a bead around the inside of the moulding flasks to stop the sand moving  Do you have a project in mined that needs castings ? Rob |
Fergus OMore:
Classically, you should use green or oil sand but there are lots of substitutes. One is mixing it with horse dung. Another is adding cement whilst your dentist will use Paris Plaster after making wax impressions. I used something called Nottingham Green Sand and made the impressions from polystyrene whilst my wife used the lost wax process. Probably, the two old books from a model engineer B. Terry Aspin will answer most of your needs. For those of an older generation will know him in Model Engineer as a cartoonist called 'Chuck' |

Rob --- End quote --- No, I have no projects in mind right now - of cause I have to melt all my scrap into bars - but nothing else ... don't tell anybody... I have 12-14 projects going right now ... I have to finish some of them first :med: Yes, maybe you'r right about the bead on the inside ... it can be glued on now I think. >> Fergus: I got some green sand from a molding company in a nearby city - they scrap 10-20 tons of sand every day - so I got 25kg ready mix and 25kg to make some new sand with extra clay and coul. I think this method best fits my way of "mold-thinking" - I think it looks as a "safe path" ... other methods looks more random to me . |
Fergus OMore:
As for melting down into bars, we simply poured the stuff into old angle iron to set. The biggest worry was old Volkswagen bits that were magnesium alloy. |
