Support brackets for race car wing |

This barely merits a project post, but as I had a bit of a hurdle to overcome, I figured I'd post here. It definitely isn't quality enough for a "how to" post... Anyhoo... As part of the on-going race car project, we are building a new rear wing (bought ones are silly expensive). It's a simple thing: 4 aluminium supports, 2 lengths of 5ft ali tube, wrapped with ali sheet & all welded together. As I have some big lumps of ali lying around, a suitably sized chunk was chosen. A wing was roughly drawn on it, bandsawed out, and partly tidied up on the mill. Next job was to cut a 1" hole in the wing part, so the tube can be pushed through. This raised a bit of a problem; I have cutters going up to 25mm on the mill, but that's not quite enough to get 1" OD pipe through. I really didn't want to turn .54mm off 5ft of 1" ali tube, but the only tools I have capable of cutting 1" or more have 3MT arbors on them. The only adaper I have is R8 to MT2... How to cut the hole...?    :palm: :smart: Simples! Mount it on a faceplate on the lathe, and finish off to diameter with a reamer (I have 3 1" reamers...): Dial in about 100rpm, add a generous squirt of WD40, and feed in at a comfortable rate. Job done! Thank goodness for big machines! |
