New machines
« on: February 17, 2012, 12:23:56 PM »
Hi all
I have narrowed my search for new machines down to the following .. Chester Comet VS, Champion 20V mill .. Warco WM250/280V-F  WM-18, or Amadeal/Arc Euro/Toolco equivalents Is there anyone in the Teesside area that has any of the above machines that would be willing to let me call in & have a look see, possibly play with for a few minutes, or let me know the pro's & cons of these machines i.e. useable 'straight out of the box' or what is needed to rectify any assembly bugs etc.

Cheers

P.S.
Have just spent a couple of hrs going through all 20 pages of tools forum & have noted that I seem to be heading in the right direction for my choice of machines, but I have noticed one commonality; all the modders who have bought machines have stated that once having received their machines the phrase..'Obligatory strip down, degrease, replace bearings, regrease & reassemble' (which says a lot for quality control) crops up with uncanny regularity, I s'pose its the usual.. you pay for what you get..don't expect a Lamborghini for the price of a ford.. etc.
My question is ..does this dismantling void any manufacturers/dealers guarantee/warranty, my understanding is that on any item that comes with a standard 12 mo.warranty, if you so much as loosen off a screw or remove a seal, your warranty becomes null & void & therefore the manufacturer/dealer has no legal obligation to repair/replace any part found to be faulty /defective ??
I know ArcEuro(usual disclaimer) do a predelivery 'overhaul' if you request it ..albeit at an exhorbitant price, but has anyone else considered this aspect, hmmmmm?

I'm on Tyneside- but with a Myford Super7B with all - or almost all the goodies

However, I'd suggest that you consider a good secondhand machine- like mine.
Mine was a basket case- and I paid basket case price. I knew what I wanted and knew that most Myfords can be reconditioned.
Again, I knew what was necessary and that I had a lot of the goodies. I took my lathe bed to Blue Diamond Machine Tools in Shildon and they did the bed beautifully and turcited the worn saddle for the same price as the then Myford factory in Nottingham.

OK, I had a fair few jobs to do that were necessary- but on the lathe itself.

What did come over was that Blue Diamond would recondition a machine to full factory standards if needed.
Maybe a telephone call would reveal what good second hand machines they have in.

It doesn't answer your question but gives you an additional factor to consider.

Good Luck

Fergus
Thanks for the info'. I recall paying a call to Blue Diamond many moons ago when I was an instructor looking to buy machinery but had thought they had gone out of business long ago.I'll take your tip & give them a call, mind you Myford Super 7B's, &, especially with powered cross feed,   in good nick  as you well know, are worth their weight in gold, well you are buying the Rolls Royce of modeller's lathes! but that is part of the problem..bl***y expensive!  :bugeye: therefore for the price in my budget I can get two machines(as mentioned) for the price of a decent Myford..yeh I know, you gets what you pay for.
cheers
George
p.s. Anyone in the area with a Myford Super 7B (with Norton Gearbox, power cross feed & accessories) for sale...  drop me a line!

I was in 'Blue Diamond' a couple of years ago- with my lathe bed. Brian Bell had a fabulous new Italian slideways grinder which was where my little bed squeezed in- between proper jobs. He had, then, an indescribably dirty ML7 with long slide, gearbox etc  but minus a tail stock( which I had) and it was £400. I peeled some of the crap from it-- and the whole thing had been re-conditioned. I simply hadn't room to take it.

So there you have it. You may be lucky and I wish you well.
