How do those advert things work?
« on: January 30, 2012, 12:31:33 PM »
Evening,

One for the technical specialists.

When I go to Gumtree and search for something, later on the things I have been looking for/viewed appear on an advert on the screen.

Does anyone know how this works and whether it is confined to Ebay/Gumtree with them being owned by the same people...?

Thanks

Nick

Everytime you go onto the internet you computer stores temporary intermet files and cookies. These are used mainly to speed up page loading, you can set your browser to automatically delete these files every time you close your browser. If that doesn't work then it will be a server somewhere remembering your IP address, login details etc and remembering what you have been looking at recently. Its all designed for targeting advertising by knowing what you look at. Some of it can also be used for rather more nefarious reasons though!
What browser do you use?

Thanks Daz,

This all takes place using "cookies", is that right?
