My dad is a retired moldmaker, now approaching 80. The shop is at his home, 7.5 miles from me. I get over there at least once a week, but don't actually have much time for many projects. I'm less interested in making up work now as I am in preparing the shop for what it will be when I retire and either live there or move it to my home. I do machine whatever may fall in the door. My nephew has a well-tooled shoe repair shop, and we occasionally make replacement parts for his high-end commercial shoe machines. I occasionally alter tooling for my employer to make it work. I fix things that need fixing, but my greatest joy is when a nearby member of a website like this wants to spend a few hours getting general or specific hands-on lessons. I invite people to come and learn for a day or a an hour. In the first ten minutes I share everything I know in my 30+ years of machining, then we spend the remaining hours actually learning together the other things that need explaining. ;) That about sums up what I do in the home shop! :) |
