It was asked on a welding forum for ideas for a receiver mounted lift crane.  I have been thinking about making one. The following link for a commercial one made from aluminum is nice but don't need anything that pricey for occasional use.
But it did give me an idea about using a trailer tongue jack for the leg support and the type of jib crane HF sells.

The only other idea was using a pipe bender mounted to a receiver plate and on the truck. Problem is it's limited use as it can't put the load into the bed. And being in line with the hitch it limits the size object to less than half the bed width. He was lifting cement chunks out of his garage floor for a flush mount cycle lift! Seemed a lot of extra work as he had a cement saw. He could have cut the slab into two smaller sections and then moved them, instead of sidewalk sized sections. But what the hey!  :doh:

Hey PT,

Great find. I could use something like that to lift wooden pallets into the back of my pickup. The 4 X 4's are a bit higher and lifting an oak pallet up that high just about does me in with my condition.

This can wipped up in a weekend. Will have to look into for a summer project.

I'm thinking of making the outrigger leg, that holds the crane have a hinge pin at a point were it comes out of the receiver.

Sort of have two half circles of plate with say at least 3 holes for a hitch pin in it to lock it in place.

And use the trailer tongue jack leg with a metal wheel on it and another brace at the hitch area.

That way you can load from either side or with the crane in the middle. With the cranes that pivot you could have real world movement to the arm that you could reach out from the side of the back of the bed to lengthen your reach so to speak!

As you have said it is a summer project here to along with hooking up the furnace in the shop and 100 others items  :coffee:

But it is some thing to think about. Just looked at the last Horrible Fright flyer they have a couple of the battery electric winches.  Which would eliminate the hard cranking. Just have to make sure it has an control lowering function rather than free wheeling cable play out.  :bugeye: or else look out feet! :jaw:

I like that wheel idea. Probably only work on pavement though, unless you use a large wheel. :thumbup:

I threw that last HF catalog away so will have to wait for the next one. :bang:

I've also been toying with idea of putting a crane on my trailer that can be put on and taken off. I could use my tractor with the bucket to put on/take off the crane. So it could be quite a heavy build. :coffee:

Oh, yeah Bernd.  You really need another project to start.  How about two more, just to keep it even?   :D

Get back to work on the coke bottle!
