Hi Nick I have over the years made up a few welded up angle plates from what ever i had to hand in the shop ,, poke holes in them were needed ,dose not matter if you machine into them , just make another when its worn out :med: Rob |

I picked up some old ones over the years I used one as a base plate for making drilling fixtures for making parrot toy parts, when I was manufacturing them for resale to pet stores before the taste in pets moved on to snakes and lizards oh my! Can't get the damn things to play with cage toys like parrots! :lol: But I also pick up some heavy wall aluminum angle pieces and I have cut sections about 6 wide out of to use for general work. and some smaller heavy wall angle aluminum about 2"x2" and cut sections about 2" wide for general non precession work. Will get some photo's tomorrow! |

Hi Nick, It does not really matter as long as it is rigid enough for what you want. Machine up for accuracy as required...or leave as it is if the angles are right. You should machine the base at least so that there is no stress or flex when mounting to a flat surface, and you don't damage whatever you mount it on to. I have got several bits of hot rolled angle (you can tell on the inside of the angle; it is not square but looks like cast) and I have no problem with drilling/grinding/cutting/whatever as they cost nothing. I do have a couple of proper ones too but I am much more gentle with those! Andy |
