Small Tube Notcher
« on: December 23, 2011, 04:44:00 PM »
Hey guys, thought I would show off the small tubing notcher that I finished last weekend. I'm gearing up to rebuild/sandblast/paint my piranha dune buggy that I built a few years ago and thought it would be handy to have one of these. The one that I used on the original build was not mine and has been used alot since, and is pretty much worn out. I don't like lending out tools, and therefore didn't want to borrow it again, so to the bandsaw I go...

Here's some of the parts roughed out. I originally planned on machining all the surfaces of all the parts, but decided against it because of time restraints. The flat bar was more than flat enough anyways.

Here's the typical joint prep for everything that got welded:

And as welded:

And as machined off (I really like that face mill, made by Glacern Machine Tools http://www.glacern.com/)

Like normal, seems like I missed alot of the build steps, so here it is pretty much finished:

The shaft is 3/4" drill rod. I wish I had a 3/4" reamer, it would have made making that hole through the block of steel go much faster. I used the boring head on the mill instead and got great results, bang on 0.751"and a nice curface finish too.  A bit of grease and some break in with the drill and it's a pretty nice plain bearing. I guess we will see how long steel on steel lasts, probably longer than I will need this tool.

Here's a few more shots:

All in all, it took about 8 hours to make. It will do up to 2" OD tube and can be set to any angle.

Very nice! I need to make one myself...

Would like to see a project log on that rebuild!
