When you're confused, use the acronym dictionary...

http://www.acronymfinder.com/

In high school English classes we were taught to define any uncommon acronym the first time it was used.  Part of the problem arises from newcomers to the web.  Acronyms like SWMBO, OTOH, BTW are so familiar to web regulars that no one would think of defining them but, for a newcomer, they can be puzzling.

Troutsqueezer:
You learn something every day. I'm an old hand when it comes to posting in forums. Been posting to them since the days of Prodigy (how far back does that go?). But until now, I've never even heard of OTOH.

Where I work, acronyms (initialisms, technically) are used as often as the word "the". I think it is a roadblock to effective communication which is important for new-hires. It took three years before I could follow a conversation around here. Thing is, they get used so much, many people here don't even know what the expansion is when you ask them.

Adding to the list a few of mine:

IMHO            In My Humble Opinion
NIMBY           Not In My Back Yard
NPT              National Pipe Taper
DOA             Dead On Arrival
RTFM            Read The F****g Manual
ROTFLMAO   Rolling On The Floor Laughing My Ass Off (old one from gaming)
RAN              Regional Area Network (telecom)

I definately recognize Troutsqueezers description. Nearly 20 yers ago i joined a telecoms company to work as a tech writer but it took the best part of the first six months to de-cipher what was talked and written about since more than 10% of the text included three-letter abbreviations. After six months the "inauguration" was over and I could read and understand .

I guess that this is common to any line of work, but it is very typical of telecoms.
