5" gauge buffers |

Hi Guys After a long time away (decorating, marriage and more decorating), I have started to Tinker and make bits again. I was given a set of frames for a 5" gauge 'Speedy' loco (LBSC design) last week. I decide to make up the buffers and buffer beams. While i have a set of drawings i am using the materials i have to hand. First up are the buffer housings, 1" square bar was used (drawings state a size of 1 1/4"). I have included the rough doodle. I had a good idea of what i need to do in my head, for example the 1st op was to centre and turn down the bit which goes through the buffer beam and bolts the housing to the buffer beam. 12 dia by 12mm threaded M12 (fine thread would be nice but 1,75 pitch die was all i had to hand) [/url] BUFFERS by tapdieuk, on Flickr[/img] [/url] IMAG0101 by tapdieuk, on Flickr[/img] Turn around and form the body, drill the hole for the buffer shank. IMAG0104 by tapdieuk, on Flickr Next on to the buffers, rather than hacking them out of a solid bar the shanks were turn up then hard soldered to some 3mm plate used for the head. The shanks have recess in them to hold a spring to allow the buffer to compress. Hi Guys I managed to finish the buffers off at the week end. The last bits that needed making were some spindles or the buffer heads, theses are simple 4 mm rods threaded M4 on each end. I made one to check the over length and the length needed on the thread parts, before cutting the other 3 to length. The threading was made easier with the use of a tailstock dia holder [/url] IMAG0116 by tapdieuk, on Flickr A trial fit of the spindle and the adding of a spring.
