Belt Grinder 72"x2"
« on: August 18, 2011, 09:51:19 AM »
They are sometimes referred to as "knife grinders"

The reason I am asking is I am thinking of making one, along the lines of the KMG one.

So anyone have one, make or build their own?

I built one, 72x2 w/ 3hp 3ph motor and a VFD, made mine tall and not so deep as most, with the motor under the desk. Consequently the desk space occupied is only about 60mm x 500mm.

At full speed it's unreal.

At slow speed it's really useful too.

Never used a bench grinder since, it's a zillion times better - faster, more flexible, better finish, easier, faster, etc etc  :bugeye:

loply,

I will probably have to stick to single phase 1.5HP, and use stepped pulleys.

I won't bother to ask if you like it.
Thanks

Hello Dave

Your grinder looks like an Ally made one, do you go on British Blades by any chance as he makes and sells them on there..

They are fantastic bits of kit

Ally even put up plans for people who would rather have a go themselves :ddb: :ddb: :ddb: :ddb:

Cheers, John

Dave,
Watch out for offers in your local Aldi and Lidl stores.  I've just picked up a belt sander and earlier a combined one with a 6" grinding disc on the other end. Both had 3 year waranties!
Tomorrow, Aldi have arc welding sets for £35, Reciprocating saws for £25 and 18V battery drills for £20. Ages ago,  I bought 3 saws but running out of blades.

Cheers

F O'M

Dave I am computer challanged so I managed to lose all the stuff  I downloaded but its based on the kmg These plans are freely available on the internet .I machined the wheels out of aluminium for the grinder but bought the motor pulleys which are cast iron.I made a set up where it uses a plattern and I used a caster wheel I bought at mica for R50.00 It is made of nylon and I just put some bearings in and trued it up.I just crowned the one aluminium wheel (80mm) and am suprized how well it tracks. I would like to try and cast some polyurethane around the 8 inch wheel and I need to find a different material for the platten as it does show signs of wear. Mind you It has taken some time to wear though.I am not into knife making this is for general shop use . With a new belt I reckon it chews through steel as fast as I can mill it. But then I am not very good at milling

Hello,
Here are the plans for a KMG clone. I made one some time ago. I have a 3HP 3phase motor with a VFD. It is a great machine.

I wrote about my build on Don Foggs site.
Good luck.
