My 2nd Poppin Flame Licker Engine
NickG:
Hi all,
I haven't been completely idle since the last models I showed on here ... almost but not completely! It's only taken another 8 months but I've finally finished the 2nd Poppin engine I started a long time ago. The first one was finished around February as a present for my dad. I can't believe it but I actually started it in February 2010 :jaw: I started making two but found it too monotonous and decided just to finish one at a time. Luckily I had already made doubles of quite a few of the more time consuming components so it wasn't too bad to finish off.
I would recommend this build to anyone who has a few steam engine builds under their belt, both engines worked first time with the initial timing settings which I did by eye so as far as flame lickers go, it must be quite a forgiving design if I've managed that! The only mods I did were slightly smaller dia flywheels with 6 lightening holes rather than 4, no radii on the top of the standard and a different, 1 piece piston design from graphite kindly donated by Ade. The bearings were also kindly donated by Jim.
Anyway, here are a couple of pics / video. The burner and base if I'm honest were a bit of a rush job, used bits that made it as easy as possible! The lid on the burner is a 'doppler' plug from an armour piercing projectile which enables spin to be measured by radar. It just happened to fit!
NickG:
Apologies for the poor video ... never been a strong point! I should have added that unlike some other flame lickers these will start from cold.

Very COOL!!!!!!!!!! :headbang:
I love the sound of those engines!
I hope to make one of those in the upcoming years!!!
This winters and most likely next years project is a sideshaft vacuum engine by Jerry Howell.
Hopefully it will run half as good as yours!!!
