A few years ago I was on a contract that took me to Scotland for the holidays. The LOML invited a few friends to the house to celebrate the New Years and I was introduced to the tradition of "First Footing". At Midnight there was a banging at the door that sounded like the door was going to cave and Linsey insisted that I answer it (unarmed, which was contrary to my Redneck instincts). I opened the door and was met by our friend Graham, pushing his way into the house with a sack of stuff in his hand, jabbering in Gaelic or Glaswegian (neither of which, I understand). Graham proceeded to present me with a dram of whisky (to warm the soul in the year to come), a crust of bread (to nourish the body for the year to come), and a piece of coal (to warm the hearth).
The symbolism of this gesture has stayed with me over the years.
So I wish to "First Foot" the members of this forum and wish you all Happiness, Health, and Prosperity for the upcoming New Year!
