Concrete machine bench moved into the w'shop..... but......

No problem getting the bench delivered and in to the workshop!

IMGP9326 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr

They just poked it right through the door and onto a set of load skates!

IMGP9332 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr

Plenty of room for the lathe!

IMGP9329 by aardvark_akubra, on Flickr

Mill in position and look at all the clear space in the workshop!

BUT,  disaster!  Major cock up! I mis-measured the mounting holes for the lathe tapped inserts!  What a blankety blank idiot!  Now I will have to make adapter plates of some kind!

John.
The new bench looks right at home, in it's new surroundings.  :)

If the only glitch is a mis-measure. Yer've not done too badly!

Hope it is easily sorted........

Like David said it looks right at home. I am sure as you come to using it more and get used to it that you will be glad you went the extra mile to get a solid bench and not be scared to do something different. It seems that no matter how hard we try to make something perfect there is always something that has to happen to spoil it. I am sure that you will work out some adapter plates that will look like they were the original intent. I look forward to hearing many good stories of the good works that come off that lathe and bench in the future.  :D :D

Cheers

Looks pretty good to me!

Don't worry, there is usually way too little clearance under the lathe anyway. Just make a dry run and find out if the lathe would be actually easier to operate if moved a little closer to edge or something (like fitting the front rail. With a riser blocks you have more leeway with chip tray, cable routting and such. See if it can be turned to a benefit. It's not like a wats are filling and the production has to be started in three hours! Move things around and develop a feel to it.

This will even give you a whole lot easier option on top paintting and other options. You have time, use it!

Clear space in a workshop? I find that hard to believe. Must be Photoshopped!

John,

Hope you don't mind me asking, but I'm sure others want to know as well - did you design it, and how much did it cost????

Total project will be about 900 Euro.  I had a basic shape and size and the concrete casting people did the actual design,

Was delivery and installation all a part of that price John?

Also are you going to put some type of cupboards under it to use up the space?

I think the off set studs that we mentioned on the other forum would would for the miscalculated holes, you could even leave a flange in the middle to rest against the table top. Once in, the grout would cover them up and you would never know they where their. It would also save drilling and messing with the bench for 4.5mm.

Yes, the job included delivery, they only had about a mile to travel and using the crane took about 5 minutes for the offloading and pokeing it into the garage.
I have some steel cabinets that I hope will fit under the bench though I have not measured them yet. There will be a brake pedal on the lathe side so whatever goes under there will likely have to be built in, I will probably make a swing out rack for lathe tooling.

What a great bench! Gives new meaning to heavy duty!  When this civilization ends and eons later when the next uncovers this in an archaeological dig it will be believed it was some kind of sacrificing alter with the drain gutter around the edge..

Too cool

Forgive me for not following your whole story, but what's inside the table top for reinforcement?

Looks handy!

Did you not fancy painting it?

Steel bar and steel mesh for reinforcement,  it will be painted after the concrete has had a few weeks to mature.  I am not sure about the top surface, maybe just a sealer or perhaps a two-pot paint if I find something at a nice price.

That's an awful nice looking setup John, but it was the shaper which caught my eye!  It looks like a travelling head machine, but no good pictures to show all it's glory, do you think you could give a pal a few closer looks at an interesting machine?  I don't know what it is, but a shaper always gets my attention, even the new ones with switches and electrical boxes and the like.  Good to see everything slide in so nice and easy, they don't always go that way. :jaw:   cheers, mad jack

Hi Jack..it is a little Adept Nr 2 (powered version), if needs be I can even put my arms around it and carry it across the shop!

It is a cute little shaper.....I made an automatic down feed since the picture which works a treat.

There will be room on the new bench for this shaper and a cold cut saw plus another, yet unknown, small machine (maybe a drill press).  I also have one of the little bandsaws (which must be the most awkward machine ever for finding space for) and a 3 1/2" Drummond lathe c:1908.  I would like to put the little lathe on but it is just a tiny bit too long.

Some more pictures, these show the down feed mechanism and some of the tricky bits for the cross feed...

John,

That is nice, I've always liked shapers - and yours is very nice. :) :) :)
