Thanks. That probably would be traditional and functional. Is there any magic with taper?

I can't tell exactly what variety my wood is, it's very dark and sinks very fast when plunged into water. Looks very resinous.

There could well be an ideal taper, unknown to me. The length of the taper is the thickness of the head. The angle will depend on how big a piece of wood you have for the handle. :)  As the handle has to pass through the finished taper, this does restrict the options.

If I was making one anew, I would finish the angled striking faces last of all, after fitting the handle.

If you need any exact details, I can measure it for you.

The two long blocks at the top left corner are Lignum Vitae, it's really dense stuff..




I'll see if I can find any closer pics of the grain (if not i'll dig them out and take some close up pics)
