A movable tool cabinet

(1/2) > >>

PeterE:
When doing some renovation work to the house two small cabinets were "left over", hmm, very useful to make a movable cabinet to harbour some of all the tools and their acccessories that until now have cluttered up my workshop.

I started out by stripping the two cabinets from unwanted parts, screwed them together, and started to make a new undercarriage with possibilities to fit swivelling wheels. The following picture shows when I am starting to build the "undercarriage".

It is basically a frame of suitable wooden "planks", but with a twist. As can be seen below I use two planks at the sides.

The reason is that when later covering the sides with a plank to fit the wheels, I have also made a box-beam which together with the fairly high plank will make up a very strong but yet quite light-weight bottom frame for the cabinet. With wood glue and screws the thing looks now as below.

Last moment for today will be to fit the wheels and then leave it to set.

I managed to get a little more done on the storage cabinet.

It is now turned right end up and after getting some paint it looks like this:

I still have the doors and shelves to do, but it is getting there.

The drawer is not a true drawer but the remains of a foldaway ironing board, pulling it out it now harbours my surface plate made from a piece of polished granite floor paving. The granite plate is mounted on a thick cement base when I renovated a small toilet some years ago. It is definately flat enough for my purposes.

The "drawer" is cleverly desigmed, fold down the "drawer front" ...

...and lift up the "drawer" which now is above table level and free for access from all four sides...

... and by storing some of the measuring out tools at the same place, it will be easy to work.

The rest of the cabinet will be equipped with drawers on runners behind the doors but I think you can guess the mess I will be hiding there.  :med:
