Making a flash light?
« on: June 21, 2011, 07:17:33 AM »
Hi folks,

After loosing my second £50 LED flashlight in 12 months I decided I would put the lathe to use and make a new one.

I can't find a particularly good source of information on what's involved in making a flashlight from scratch though, there's various websites but none seem that good, and most seem to be about modifying lights rather than making 'em from scratch.

Just wondering if anybody knows where I can turn to for info on the various components (like drivers and LEDs and buttons and suchlike)?

Cheers,
Rich

As for parts I can recommend this having purchased and received good service there:

http://theledguy.chainreactionweb.com/  (The Sandwich Shoppe)

Candlepowerforums is a site that can answer many other questions.

If your browser can handle the massive quantity of photos that Will (wquiles) posts, this thread is a very good place to start.

Depending on how big a light you're after, you may find some help here on MadModder in Ralph's thread on scratch-building LED torches

Depends if you want a decent one or not.

I bought mine when I was training to be an infantry officer, and a dustproof/waterproof/high power torch was a worthwhile investment.

Cheap ones are not sealed and don't have much power and don't run for long before the battery dies.

If you build one, please post up a build thread!
