Filling holes in cast iron castings. |

Hi guys, I've finally got a little time back in my shop and gone back to my Stuart No4. I made a start on the flywheel, but as I turned it to size I found a 'blow' hole on its perimeter. Only a couple of mm but too deep to machine out. I'd like to polish the rim rather than paint. Does anyone have any good suggestions for some method of filling this? Doesn't have to be perfect (I'll stop the engine with the hole underneath ::) ) but any suggestions that will improve the cosmetic appearance beyond that of a black hole is welcome. Steve. |

I found what looks like solder or lead on a small spot on the knee way of my old shaper and found the same thing on a small imperfection on my Chinese thicknessor table. Not sure how it's put in there but it is hardly noticeable. Dave |

Hi Dave , how about a diy filler , mixing some fine cast iron metal particles with a two part epoxy glue John |
Jasonb:
Drill it out and loctite a tight fitting bit of CI into the hole. Nearest looking filler is plastic paddings "plastic metal" this is like car body filler but has iron powder as the filler, JB weld is a bit too light a grey. Jason |

Hi Steve, How old is the engine? when I bought my 10v kit recently I found this beneath the surface of the cylinder - So I sent a polite email & pic attached explaining that I didn't know if this would affect performance etc. and they immediately replied asking for my home address and sent me a new casting which I had in just a few days :D Amazing service, maybe worth a go. Steve - M. |
