Got a nice new 6" DIGITAL VERNIER CALIPER
« on: May 17, 2011, 04:13:47 AM »
got a new 6" Digital Vernier Caliper , the way it differs is that it gives  (FRACTION / MM / IMP)
WITH ON/OFF SWITCH AND INCH/METRIC AND FRACTION CONVERSION. SPC OUTPUT.

it works well saves me getting charts out.

What's a fraction ?

None of my machines seem to have these on them ?

I've got one similar to that one. I think Stew has one too. Which is where I first saw one.

Rather handy. I have some imperial drill bits with the sizes vaguely etched on the shanks. Very good drills, but the markings wear off.
Quick swipe with that caliper, and I'm away. Otherwise it's the mike and 'where is the damned plastic converter chart you get with M&W micrometers' ..  :bang:
Can't remember the 32ths & 64ths decimals. Or a lot of 16ths either.

NO SPC output. What's that ?? Mine's just a screen I look at. Cheapskate version ???

JS is just jealous ...

I have a few modest talents. Knowing what I'm doing isn't one of them.

I think it means you can fit one off the small extension screens to it.
I bought it because I sometimes use silver steel and it tends to be imperial.

I have an old dial set that I found in B&Q once that are marked in fractions. Accurate they're not, but for picking up and checking sizes of material they're excellent.

When I built my Shumatech DRO's I modified the software to allow fractions to be entered/displayed. Co-ordinate drilling from plans marked in fractions is a doddle now - haven't needed to get my calculator out for a while.
Since my changes are published, if you've got a Shumatech 550 you can enter a fraction by typing two decimals. i.e. 1.5.16 is 1 and 5/16ths.

I find a left-handed one very useful for lathe work.  No, it's not a joke:

Dunno why nobody ever thought of that before.  :ddb: :ddb:

Grizzly stocks LH digital as well as LH dial (clock) calipers. The dial model only comes in inch measurements though. Like No1_sonuk I have one for use at the lathe. I use the dial type.
