And what the 'ell is a "nowt"
--- End quote ---
"Nowt", as in "Nowt tekken' oot" = "Nothing taken out"...
Nowt is probably most frequently used in North East England (Rob Wilson's neck of the woods), but is heard all over the country, especially if one is taking the piss out of some hapless Geordie.
The opposite of "Nowt" (nothing) is, naturally, "Owt" (anything). e.g. "Whud thur be owt else, love?" - usually heard at a "greasy spoon" (roadside cafe) after you've ordered your traditional greasy spoon breakfast (fried bacon, fried eggs, fried mushrooms, fried black pudding, deep-fried sausage, fried tomato, baked beans, deep-fried hash brown (up-market establishments only), fried bread, 2 rounds of buttered toast, and a large mug of white tea with 3 sugars).
Hmm, that's made me hungry... must be breakfast time :D
andyf:
"Nowt" and "owt" are dialect forms of naught (as in "it all came to naught", or nothing) and "aught" meaning something. Naught and aught have largely fallen out of use, but nowt and owt are very much alive and kicking in northern England.
You learn summat new every day!
