Mill Vise questions. |

marfaguy:
I've got this model vise from Little machine shop. http://www.littlemachineshop.com/products/product_view.php?ProductID=1590 I assume since it's hardened to Rc 58-62 I'm not going to be able to mill a slot in the bottom, correct? :( I don't think it would make any difference but I've got this model Micro Mark mini mill. http://www.micromark.com/MicroLux-High-Precision-Heavy-Duty-R8-Miniature-Milling-Machine,9616.html Also does anybody know what diameter and thread pitch the hole on the sides of the fixed jaw is? I'd like to make a stop block for the vise incorporating those holes. TIA, Charles |

Charles, While it is possible to "mill" Rc58-62 hard steel, you are very unlikely to be happy with the results. In terms of the screw thread used on the sides, LMS is usually quite helpful about such things. The traditional use of such vises is to hold small parts such that they can be moved from work station to station with their orientation and indexing intact. They are really not meant to be stand-alone workholding devices. You might find a 4 inch angle-lock type vise more generally useful. ??? |

Thanks Lew, I'll send Chris at LMS an email. |
