Anyone got a M4 0.5mm (metric fine) die
« on: February 03, 2011, 04:27:42 PM »
Hi all

I picked up a Verdict DTI a while ago but other than a giving it a quick once over at the car boot sale I've never really looked at it. Tonight I found it in the drawer and on a more careful examination it looks like it works nice and smoothly but it would appear that the top mounting post has been bent at some time - no biggy I thought just a 2 min job to knock up another one, however it turns out to have a not too common metric fine pitch thread.

So favour time...... has anyone got a M4 0.5mm die and if so would they mind putting about 4mm of thread onto the end of a 25mm long piece of 6mm stock.

I know I can buy a die for around £10 but it's something I'm only likely to ever use the once and the DTI only cost me £2  :)

Cheers

Jim

Hi Jim,
The other alternative would be to run a standard M4 tap down the hole and make the shaft to suit the new thread in the hole. Purists might hold their hands up in disgust, but it should work as it is no greatly loaded. It not as if any one from the Verdict Owners Club would "black ball" you.

Jim,

I'm pretty sure I've got one knocking about, I'll have a check when I get into the workshop shortly. What sort of metal (steel? brass? ali?) do you need the thread in?
Cheers!

Hi AdeV

The original part is steel, but any metal will be fine, it's only used to mount the DTI to an arm or stand so isn't a stress critical part or anything.

Ned

If Ade can't find his die then I think I'll give your suggestion a go

Thanks to you both for replying

Hi Jim,

Apologies, I only have M4 0.7 and M4 0.75 :( I should have said earlier, but I'm having a massive clear-up of my bench (no more tides!), including making some under-bench storage (since Ralph told me off for not having any  :poke:) - and I forgot to come back out to the office.

Cheers!

No problem Ade, thought it was going to be a bit of a long shot when I orginally asked anyway

I'll give Ned's suggestion a shot, it's not like I got much to lose, not even the price of a pint  :)

Cheers

A good ending all around then.

It really is nice to see members helping each other out in a situation like this.

Another good reason for being a member of MadModder  :mmr:

Good on you Jim.

Jim & Jim - good fix between you! :)

This leads me onto a question....

I have two M4 metric dies: an 0.7 & 0.75. According to a brief google, M4x0.5 is Metric Fine, and M4x0.7 is metric coarse. So what the heck is M4*0.75?
Cheers!

Hi AdeV,
Are you sure that your M4x0.75 is not in fact a M4.5x0.75?

It definitely has M4 0.75 stamped on it, but it's from a cheap-arsed set I bought the other year, so it could be misprinted...?
