1959 TOS Shaper HM45
« on: February 02, 2011, 04:22:52 AM »
(Apologies to any Aussies who have already seen this.) I thought some of the European contingent here may know about these. I can't find a single other example of this machine on the net, which I find a bit surprising. The only other TOS shapers I've found are on European machinery dealer's sites, and they look quite different to mine. It's likely they came from different factories. Apparently TOS was an umbrella group. Mine was actually made by Kovosvit Holoubkov. That company still exists, in a very different form, and they kindly sent me scans of the manual, which is fantastic. But they don't know about them - it's just a dusty archive. So I'd be very interested to hear from anyone else with a TOS shaper. The pic shows it as found, in the 'rejects' corner of a dealer's warehouse. I drove 700km and towed it home. Then pulled it apart. I will also include the specs page from the manual.

Bryan

Welcome to the club.

30 years ago I worked in a large shop where we had 2 full size shapers like that running all day long, I cannot tell you for sure that those were of this manufacture but the colour of them slaps me in the face and pushes my remember bell!

I in the last week just purchased a 7” shaper and I am just getting familiar with it again after all these years, if you have any work that you have created on the machine I / we would be interested in seeing the results and reading about them.

BTW I live in the states now but 30 years ago I was living in the UK,  I know your trying to track down this machines history, so don’t go thinking there here in the US.

All the best    Anthony.
If you cant fix it, get another hobby.

Hiya Bryan

Welcome to the collective :borg:

How about a restore log on your shaper? That would be pretty cool. Quite a few of us are shaper fans.

Eric
 If you mean 'random blurry snapshots of filth and chaos' I'll see what I can do.

Eric, it weighs 1200kg (2650lb). Which makes it the perfect size because it's about the biggest thing I could tow. It has an 18" stroke and 4hp. Only a tiddler compared to some US stuff. A size up from the usual hobby stuff, granted.

Anthony, that colour is not original. It was the usual pale green. It had a sticker on it from a training college so I guess the blue was their standard colour. It had apparently been applied by a monkey with a broom. It's not running so I haven't done any work on it yet but when I do you'll hear about it.

Hi Brian, kudos on a nice find there, lots of shaper fans seem to pop out of the woodwork when one appears.  I too would enjoy watching a build log on that machine, I hope you get a lot of working satisfaction out of it. cheers, mad jack

Yes, but what a nice toy!

For those wanting a project log, sorry it's not gonna happen. I need to conserve my energy for the actual work and not dissipate it on photography and writing. So you'll have to settle for before and after pics. Coupla weeks. (That's my standard answer and is completely meaningless.)
