Knocking one off the list ,,, Tapping attachment
« on: December 05, 2010, 02:56:11 PM »
Hi Lads

Being at a bit of a loose end this afternoon i thought i would make a start on a tapping tool ,,,, giving it a bit thought i decided instead of making the complete tool i would make an attachment to fit my new ped/drill as it has a good stiff column and large table ,,, this way i would save on shop space , material and time  :med:

The design so far ,  going to be a welded up job  :dremel:

It will fit here, between the collar and head casting  and can be swung out of the way when not required

Selection of mystery metal for the job  :)

A bit of ruff machining to size and welding  :dremel:

I still have to make and weld in the webs

When i have it all welded up i will stick it in the furnace for a bit of stress relieving  ,, then machine it up proper  :dremel:

I was going to ask about it being square and perpendicular, but I think you answered it for me.

What did you weld it with?

Eric

Nice one!
but does it not interfere with the table rack on the support column ?
I did wonder how you would keep the two bored bushes parallel, but see at the end you had allowed for it, with stress relief then finish boring.
I am a great believer where possible to prefab with the welder, I like welding as well as turning.
As I said nice one, many thanks for the pics. :nrocks:

Hi Rob

Nice idea.. would it not be easier to make a two-piece clamp? No need to dismantle the drill M/C. Or have you discounted that idea ?

I notice some clumsy oaf has poked holes in the cross-vice....

Crikey.. do you think it will be sturdy enough, Rob?  Looks like a con-rod for the QE-2!
Guess it will be okay if you are only tapping small holes, like 1"-8 tpi.  If it's not stout enough
you could always put a platter on it for a swing-out hors d oeuvres server.

You go, Mister!  (and I didn't see no stinkin' holes..)

Thought it was still under engineered for 14 BA   so i welded some extra bits on

Into the furnace for a bit of a warm up ,,,

it can stay there for now,,,,, until tomorrow to cool down slowly and normalize  stress relief :coffee:

Looks like it's going to be a really useful piece of kit. The arm is pretty long, and the beefiness will certainly give it rigidity. So, unlike many puny tapping stands, you will be able to tap holes a long way in from the edge of the material. Great job.

Hi Chris

The part was stuck in the furnace so that i could get rid of any internal stresses in the welded part that may have built up due to welding.

Over time the internal stresses can cause the part to move ,, they can also come out when machining operations are carried out .Just like when you machine more off one side of length of bright mild steel flat bar

So it was placed in the furnace brought up to heat and left to soak a heat for 1/2 an hour (rule of thumb for soak time is 1 hour per inch of thickness ) then left to cool down very slowly . :med: :med:

Well its cooled down now and i have given it a quick blast to remove the black scale ,, some shots of it clean with a couple of every day shop tools in for scale  ::)

I will start machining it the morn (tomorrow)

David :    furnace is to well insulated ,,, you have to get in it to feel the heat  :D

Hi Paul

The 3D model was done in Solidworks  :dremel:

Been a bit slow in the shop over the past few days ,not allot done ,, mounted the arm to the mill table ,,, making sure that it was nice and level and making sure it was clamped evenly , so that it was not distorted by the clamping ,,,that would be no good as when the clamping force was removed the bores would come out all to cock .

facing the underside so that its square to the bore

Cheers Rob

Hi Gerhard

No your not missing something ,,, i should have said the i used a boring and facing head to do the job   , my B/H has the capability  to face off the job , cut grooves and do under cutting and tapered bores  :dremel:

You attach a bar to the feed ring witch you keep hold of and the head feeds in/out until it hits the stop , witch cuts the feed   ,, also fitted with rapid return  :)

Rob

Rob,
Silly question but why not lift the table off, make a bushing for where the table spigot goes and use that arm, put the vise on the base table ?  Don't apply now as you have made it but others could do this without making a new arm when most bench drills already have one

Hi Rob,

I’m not sure if you already have a chuck to use in your tapping attachment. If not, you might be interested in the cunning geometry of this type: http://mikesworkshop.weebly.com/improved-chuck-for-taps.html

Of course, things might have to be scaled down a bit to fit your dainty attachment

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short
