A Gismo ??? If it has a flywheel or spins and is made with small parts. I'll take one! If it makes noise, moves, or requires frequent oiling and dusting it's a better deal yet. It's especially right if its shiny and bright; but if it's dirty and dull it wont mater at all...

To tell the truth I don't think that their is any way that a supervisor could have been present when that happened. Nobody could be that stupid to let their students do something like that.

He´s still young enough to consider some other career. Instead of machining, with those gifts, he might be quite succesful in politics. A natural in making blunders.

Gordon Bennett it makes your blood run cold.

During my apprenticeship we were shown a training film, and told by our lecturer,this is NOT how to check for burrs....the film showed a decent sized lathe, turning fairly slowly....about 60rpm I suppose..the part was about 12" diameter, with a 10" bore.  The point of the film was titled as "Checking for Burrs", and it showed the operator checking WHILST THE LATHE WAS RUNNING, WITH HIS FINGERS.  You can tell the impression it made on me even 45 years later!!

I think all of you are missing the bigger picture.  You have gotten it backwards.

We need to encourage the stupid ones to attempt dangerous things, and ignore all safety advice from wiser heads.  This has the advantage of killing off the dumber ones, making the species as a whole smarter.

School too confining?  Don't care to learn all those facts and numbers and words?  Go bungie jumping, with a rope you made yourself.  Drive a motorcycle in heavy traffic without leathers or a helmet.  Make those bad edgamacators go away permanently!
