My New Lathe Arrived
« on: October 06, 2010, 10:23:48 AM »
The new Jet GHB-1440A lathe I ordered has arrived. The unit's base came in 3 boxes and the lathe came in one large heavy crate (about 1300#). It took a long day to assemble the base and rig the lathe onto the base. Its up and running and is much smoother than the 12" Atlas it replaced.

1 - the base
2 the lathe going in
3 all assembled

Me too, I jealous too.

I'd like to get a new big one like that. Probably a Grizzly.

I see there might be a mill to the right of the lathe in the second picture?

Here is a link to the lathe, I didn't buy it thru them, or pay that price, but the link is convenient.

Yes, behind the lathe is a Jet JVM 836 mill, with a 4" riser block from Grizzly.

Very nice lathe Jack. Jet do make a nice looking version of this size lathe.

You will find that going from the Atlas to this one, with the separate power shaft, a real joy. I think that is the bit that I enjoy the most, plus of course the D1-4 mount.

I made a new t-nut and mounted my Aloris QCTP, then fitted a 5" LMS 5C collet chuck and a 6" Bison 3 jaw chuck on new D1-4 backing plates that I bought at the Grizzly scratch and dent sale in Muncy, Pa on 9/25/10. The lathe came with a 6" Chinese 3 jaw chuck, but, I felt the Bison was a better option, the unit also came with a 8" 4 jaw, that seems better quality than the 6".

1 - the Aloris mounted
2 - another view
3 - the 5" LMS 5C collet chuck
4 - the 6" Bison 3 jaw

Got to ask, did Jet leave the pallet truck.

Nice machine known as the Coventry Delux over here.
Mates got a Coventry but prefers the 49 year old Harrison 11".

I am going to have a look at what might be a bargain and does have a D1-4 mounting. What i need to know is can you mount a Bison 3 jaw 5" on a back plate?
Already got three lathes :headbang:

Jonny,

A D1-4 will take a 5" chuck, I have fitted a 5" 5C collet chuck and a normal 5" 4 jaw self centring. If you had a front bolting chuck, I would reckon you could squeeze on a 4".

Backplates are a little expensive at around 40 squid.

Bogs

The 6-1/4" is about $50 and the 8-1/4" is about $75, for the D1-4 backing plates

PS. yes Jet did leave the pallet jack, but also left a hefty invoice to go with it.

But Jack,

You don't live on Treasure Island.

They can charge us whatever they like.

Thanks for confirmation Bogs i had a feeling a small chucj would go on a D1-4 back plate.
Opens up possibilities now.

Was going to kit out with a DRO and magnetic Y axis readout from fair next week, now might go for newer bigger lathe.

After a bad week spent in Vermont working, I got back to important things in the shop. The second D1-4 backing plate, back ordered before, for my 8" Bison 3 jaw chuck arrived, and I got it installed today. as I bought the chuck used, I found the mounting holes for back mounting were stripped or mangled. I ended up drilling the chuck body, and mounted the chuck to the backing plate, using bolt thru the chuck face, into threaded holes in te backing plate.
