Anchor-casting on UK Channel 4 TV 21:00 BST Mon 4 Oct
« on: October 04, 2010, 03:42:39 PM »
Just noticed - about to start on UK Channel 4 "Titanic - The Mission" - part 2 of a 5 part series looking at the engineering behind the Titanic.

From Channel4.com intro:

Quote
The Titanic was made up of hundreds of thousands of individually crafted steel components. To explore the skills that went into each and every one of them, our team will cast the Titanic's iconic 16 ton steel bow anchor at one of the last steelworks in Britain: Forgemasters in Sheffield. Still visible on the Titanic wreck, this was then the biggest anchor the world had ever seen.

Also watchable at 22:00 BST on Ch4+1 and also on their 4OD on-demand service http://www.channel4.com/programmes/titanic-the-mission/episode-guide/series-1

Artie & Rob - please take good notes and then report when you've each cast a similar one

 Hi DMIOM

Thoroughly enjoyed the program

looked a bit hotter than when I worked in a glass factory  ( pilkington's in St Helens)

searched for matches and other combustables , before changing a  thermocouple ( lucky to change one before you had to take a break
10 mins on 20 mins off thats all you could manage )

I understand there is more industry on the island these days
not just ejector seats and SQN mixers
I've used a SQN-3 mixer for years

I used to 'skinny dip' in the 'hotties' at Pilks... It was full of guppies and other tropical fish.

What bothers me is what happened to all the tropical fish when they turned off the hot water? Did they just die or did some manage to adapt?

Hi John,
My parents used to run (what was then called) "The Float Inn" on Liverpool Rd, and then the "Rope And Anchor" near the old cinema (might be a gym or YMCA now).
I moved to Sutton, then bought a house in Sutton Leach, now I live in Gt Sankey, Warrington.

Damn, I missed it, will have to 4OD it tomorrow at work, erm, oops, did I say that out loud?

Sounds like there's a fair concentration of madmodders round Merseyside & vicinity; not to mention the cluster around Crewe way, a few in North Wales...

S'funny, I always thought Birmingham & the Midlands was the real machine industry land, but I guess with Manchester & Liverpool playing such a huge part in the industrial revolution, that there was lots of machining going on here too.
Cheers!
Ade.

Hi

The anchor was made at my works, the shank was made in the forge on the 2,500tonne press, the other bit (dunno what it's called!) was made in my bit, the foundry..

I missed all the fun due to suffering a fall whilst pouring 180tonnes of iron (busted ribs) but i was impressed with the program

Some jobs we made..

Roll housing leg of around 250tonnes, there are four of these plus a top and bottom on the finished mill..

A cylinder of some sort..

Part of a screw press that produces parts for the airbus..

There are three fettlers working on the press in this pic though it's hard to see through the flash of the arc-air..

emptying the slag/leftover steel from pouring a job..

Sorry if the images are too large, i don't know how to do the thumbnail pics yet

Cheers, John :)
