Ah, but the worst part is that it has already been done. I was the chief mechanical engineer on the DoT program that perfected (the original development work was done in the 50's and 60's) automotive airbag restraint systems. (This sounds really impressive until you realize that (A) airbags are chemical rather than mechanical and (B) that I spent nearly three years working on a program that was designed to blow-up in my face!) We did such things -- with crash-test dummies (it was part of the testing spec). A medium sized car's driver's side airbag will "loft" a 100 kg dummy slightly more than 2 m straight up. A medium sized car's passenger's side airbag will "loft" the same dummy nearly 4 m.
The first (head-on collision simulation) test we did with passenger's side airbags in a K-car simulator had the (100 kg) "unbelted" dummy fly through the back window nearly 35 feet aft of the (simulated) rear bumper. By the time we qualified it, an unbelted dummy only got smashed into the back window. If you combine airbag restraints with a standard seat belt, you are about 80% as well protected as using an NHRA 5-point harness alone.
The tubular inflator these jackasses used is a passenger's side airbag. Driver's side airbag inflators are look like a tuna fish can (only about 50% larger). The original "airbag inflator" work was done in the 1890's as the German Navy was being built up. They were used to recover torpedo targets at (Naval) firing ranges.
