Gack He-20 toolroom shaper
« on: August 11, 2010, 04:20:32 PM »
Hi Folks,

As my projects are a bit slow on the go at the moment, I decided, that it is time for a new machine in my shop...  ::)

But this story started a bit earlier:
A friend of mine asked me a few month ago, if I want to buy his Gack He-20 toolroom shaper...but as I just had bought a new car, i was a bit short on money, so I had to decline his offer, so another buyer was found, BUT that buyer decided after a few weeks that he does not want to buy it...so the machine stayed where it was.

A few days ago, I was again asked, if I want to buy the shaper...i was pondering hard...and two days ago, he asked again...and this time, I said yes :)

Today i borrowed my fathers car (a little bigger than mine) and picked up the machine (only 150km away from me).

We pulled the machine appart and pressed everything into the car...

Here is the machine column:

The small parts are already down in the basement, in my shop, the machine stand and the column will follow tomorrow..

The pre-owner made a short video, where the shaper can be seen in detail:

The machine was built 1965 and then put to stock in an depot of the german army (Hence the camo green color), then sold to Mr. Müller, of who I bought the shaper...that means, the machine is almost like new, the scaping marks on the ways are clear visible, the paint has only a few scratches, the accessories (a great vice, a few cutters and the tools to operate the machine) are complete and in perfect condition...

greetings
Stefan

A lovely machine, Stefan! I´ve seen them come from the German Army surplus stocks, and envied every buyer... They´re unused (for all practical purposes), very well made machines!

That's just beautiful.  My mouth was watering!
Like finding a 1965 Mustang that sat in a little old lady's garage since she bought it.

Hope you have fun with it.  I would!

Thats right, and when the machine is disassembled, the parts can be manhandled by two persons without a problem.

Today, 8 in the morning I started to assemble the machine:

Machine stand and column:

Table and ram mounted:

Ready:

I did some shaping in aluminum, steel, cast iron and tool steel and got very good results in aluminum, but i have some problems with steel, the surface gets a bit rough...maybe the cutter was not perfect sharp. I will see tomorrow.

Picture of the surface in aluminum:

And a short video of the shaper working:

greetings

Beautiful machine Stefan!

I have a very small Adept 2 shaper and it took me several weeks to get a good finish on steel!  But now I can start a job with confidence.

I feel my machine is much more rigid in the horizontal than vertical direction so it is easier to get a good finish when the tool is cutting more on the side than the bottom.  Also, for steel I need to set my tools with absolute minimum 'stick out' and frequently give the tool a little wipe with a diamond hone.

I never have any success with any tool that is shaped with the cutting edge at right angles to the travel and I need to always grind my tools so that the sort of 'slice' the cut.

Your machine is much bigger than mine and maybe these points do not apply to yours.

Again, I too envy your machine!

and... as you have no doubt discovered... the damn things throw chips everywhere! Small round chips (steel) which stick to the bottom of your boots and go all through the house.... simply the messy-est machine in my shop..... probably why I like it so much.

Try it on steel with some cutting fluid.... the smoke trails are impressive.... is this in your basement?
Are you married?
Do you want to stay married?
Id put an exhaust fan near it if I were you.... :(

After a lot of serious steel slicing they can smoke upo the place a lot.... havea look at this link

Thanks for the vid, Ive been known to simply cut steel so I can watch mine.... as said, it is mesmerising... well done mate..

Back again,

Now I have used the shaper a bit in the shop (squaring stock, shaping chamfers on workpieces, etc.), and slowly I am getting a nice finish on steel...a good sharpened cutter helps much

Artie:
Yeah, the chips fly everywhere...but it has one advantage: The shaper cleans relative clean...it throws the smoking chips over to the cnc mill...

Not married, it's the basement of my parents house :)

Great video, THAT are nice chips.

The guy I bought the shaper from, has two other shapers, one with 650mm (ca. 25") travel of the ram... one big beast of a machine and a smaller one with only 350mm (ca. 14") travel...also nice machines :)
