Machining Copper Pipe.
« on: July 23, 2010, 02:40:04 PM »
I posted this on my other, steamtoy forum, where lots of `em mess around with bits of pipe etc...... Then I realised there were probably even more, new lathe users on Modder........   ::)

............................

I was facing up a length of 40mm bore pipe, when I remembered..... Two new lathe owners, had mentioned having "moments" when working copper pipe.   :bugeye:

Here`s how I do it......

Two neatly fitting bungs. (The yellow stuff`s plastic. Hard wood would be ok).

Plain bung for chuck end, to stop crushing. Tailstock end with convenient sized hole.

Paper inside to keep em apart.

Convenient sized rod in convenient sized hole. Machine as you like!

Works for me!

Seen that done with two pieces of hard wood for the plugs (bungs).

Now, when machining copper be sure to add mouse milk to the tool. Helps with the finish.

Actually it's sort of a tail (no pun intended) that you tell a newbie that is working with copper for the first time. In Guy Lautard's Bedside Readers there is an anecdote about tapping copper and that using milk gives better results. This is true.

But some where in the years since I've had those books I came across a story of using milk to machine copper. Then the question came up as to what kind of milk and mouse milk was suggested as a joke to the newbie working copper for the first time. I wish I could remember were I saw that.

It's always fun to put something like this in a conversion just to see the reaction of the readers. But then somebody comes along does a google and actually finds a product called mouse mill. Now I wonder if the mouse milk story came first or the mouse milk product came first. Kind of like the chicken and the egg.

Oh well, back to machining.
