Laminated Handle Material, A diy,demo

(1/1)

PTsideshow:
I came across this demo on making handle material.  Micarta is a material, or process, developed in the 1950s by Westinghouse. It can be duplicated in a home shop with minimum equipment and materials. As they show they went to the high end of resins,It is also favored in the sign biz as an all around great performer, but it is as they say"you get what you pay for".
This link is from the NTBA. North Texas Blacksmith Asoc.
LM105 their name for the handle material
One thing that I think from having down molds, plaster casting and make up effects casting that the use of a vacuum container with a handle pump or a powered vacuum pump to remove the air out of the material and resin might be a good addition to the process.
I haven't tried it but another thing to add to the list.

Glenn,

Nice link. There looks like that process could be useful in most anything.

BTW, I use a refrigirator compressor as a vacuum unit. Works very nice.
