Hi everybody,
I have been wanting to make things for a while, but got caught up with the house/kids/job etc loop for a while !.  Eventually I managed to get enough time/dosh to get a small lathe and am just starting to learn how to use it properly. The lathe is an Ideal 3 1/2" with screw cutting gears and a few other bits.  Yes I have read the small print  :worthless:



I was fortunate to work for a large place that made radars (no names no pack drill !); they closed my factory after I had been there for 3-4 years. This was sad........ however during the clear out there were several skips that they kept filling with metal tools and bits, and there were several of us who recognised the future value of this and pockets were duly filled !. All legal of course you got a passout from the shop floor chap who was very understanding. So I got plenty lathe HSS tools, a cracking vice and other odds and sods, that I was sure would come in useful one day !.

I just started a new job, which unfortunately means about 3-4hrs travelling so evening machining time is a bit limited, however roll on the weekend !.

Sounds like you have plans.... What ya gonna build with your procured tooling?


When you get something in the making be sure to follow the instructions....  :worthless: ....  and post us some snaps in the project logs  :thumbup:



3-4hrs travelling..... Is that per day??  :bugeye:

Thanks for the reply.

I am an electronic engineer by hobby and profession, and I always wanted to be able to build things that I could fit my electronics into. One example are the robots in my avatar. I first saw Microbot over in Detroit about 20years ago, and was amazed by how "clever" they seemed, assembling some plastic clip type thing. So I would like to try making something similar. Also a chap called Theo Jansen made an interesting walking robot using a clever mechanism. Also....

Far too many ideas, and not enough time. A time machine would be handy!.

I just happened to to look closer at your avatar. Those are neat looking. Are they computer controled or by jostick?

Perhaps some pic's of them in the "Gallery Section" if you can find the time. Would be highly appreciated. I kind of like robots. I've always wanted to build one that runs around on the floor. But......time and other projects already started are taking presidence.
