Little surface gauge-H.Hall design

Hello.
Iīm trying to improve my skills and bought H.Hallīs book:Lathework-a complete course.
For my first project,Iīm building the little surface gauge.
Now that it comes to the cut that has to be sawn in the base as a part of the adjustment fixture,Iīm wondering if itīs meant to be circular or just at one side.The drawing and the text is not that clear to me.
Did anyone build that gauge too and can give me a clue?

Last row,the one at flickr.com.with the round base.
The V-groove, that is meant to camouflage the unsightly handsawn cut,is going all around;but I canīt see the sawn cut in itself.
Anyway,here are some pictures of my current progress:



The base is turned already.Trying to level the base for flycutting the flat and drilling the holes.

Turning the necessary thin piece collet.

The cuts are straight across, leaving a 2mm piece of material to act as a "hinge".

The top, right drawing on page 19 is a cross-section through the cut, and shows the 2mm piece with diagonal hatching lines.

Anyhow,thank you for your help.
ASFAICS the cross section drawing shows only one straight cut on the left side.If I got you right,I have to saw 4 straight across cuts,one on each "side",correct ?And then there should only last a hinge of 2mm in the middle of the base?

Hey,

Looks like 2 cuts to me, one shallow on the left, and one very deep on the right.  The 2 "ends" of the hinge are formed by the initial turning of the groove.

Hello.
To come to an end,the gauge is finished.
More or less,the "fine adjustment" seems to be useless.Maybe I did something wrong?
Anyway,the making offered me some good options to improve my skills.
My next and more demanding project will be a rear toolpost for my Super 7.

That looks purposeful, solid, chunky........ 

Probably much more use to the likes of us, than my full size/ oversize one, made as an apprentice in 1960.
