Take a look at www.lathes.co.uk  there can not be too many one legged lathes around!

Sure looks nice.

It looks similar to a Mellor, but I'm not sure if it is the one?
You will find it a distinct help… if you know and look as if you know what you are doing. (IRS training manual)

Tony Griffiths has a "can you identify it?" section - look at Unknown Lathes in his machinery archive. Maybe he would post a pic of it there.

Saxony is the southernmost part of what was East Germany. The lathe probably dates from before reunification, and was no doubt made for export outside the communist bloc and labelled "Made in Saxony" in an attempt to avoid the possible negative connotations of "Made in the German Democratic Republic".

I've cut the end off it twice, but it's still too short

Maybe it is a 'Fischer' later named VEB, there is not much to go on except made in the same part of Europe but notice the somewhat enthusiastic use of nicely turned cranks instead of hand wheels on the carriage and on the back stop.

I cannot see one just like yours though.
